Chapter XIII

Devina awoke with a start to the darkness of the night sky, the rhythm of a horse moving at a steady, moderate pace beneath her, and the sensation of strong arms holding her upright. Then came the pain, throbbing and persistent. She attempted to touch her jaw, the source of her pain, but was unable to lift her hand. Something was wrong.

Disoriented and shaken, Devina was struggling to clear her mind when, suddenly, total recall snapped her eyes wide open, and she glanced around, determinedly ignoring the pain in her head. The horse was traveling over a stark landscape lit solely by a yellow half-moon. Looking down she saw that her wrists were tied in front of her as if she were a common criminal!

Her heart pounding, Devina twisted around toward the man whose arms supported her. His features were shadowed by the wide brim of his hat, but she could see him clearly enough to know that it was the man with Charles's face.

Rage and fear blended into instinctive resistance, and she was suddenly thrashing and twisting in her captor's grip. Unsure who the man was or where he was taking her, she was certain of only one thing: She had to escape.

The strong arms tightened around her. A deep, angry curse was followed by a low grunt as she jammed her elbows into her captor's aides with as much force as she could muster, almost dislodging his hold. For the briefest moment she swayed uncertainly in the saddle, her bound hands reaching for the saddle horn, only to feel her captor's arms clamp even more strongly around her. Her struggles continued even as her captor reined the horse to a halt.

"Sit still, dammit! You almost fell!"

"Let me go! You'll never get away with this. My father will come after us. He won't stop until he catches up and then he'll

"Your father!" The deep voice, now chillingly familiar, was filled with scorn. "Your father probably doesn't even realize you're gone."

Suddenly remembering the second man, the blond fellow who had helped subdue her in the garden, Devina glanced frantically around them.

"No use looking for help. We've been on this trail for over an hour, and there's no sign of our being followed. And if someone should start after us tonight, I've left a lookout back a few miles who'll signal in time for me to hide us both without a trace. But don't get your hopes up. No one's coming. No one has any idea where to look for you, and that's the way it's going to stay."

Abruptly, Devina was struggling again, twisting and turning, swinging her bound arms in a desperate attempt to free herself from her captor's grip.

Suddenly the iron grip of her captor tightened, crushing her against the wall of his chest, so tight that she was not only helpless but breathless as well. His warm breath fanned her cheek as he held her motionless in a deliberate silence aimed at allowing the true helplessness of her position to register fully in her mind.
